Inspired by a found vintage postcard depicting South Beach in Deal during a regatta around 100 years ago, Greetings from DEAL: Time Ball 2012 is a proposed summer film event recording the 2012 Deal Regatta. Led by artist Colin Priest the ambition of the event is to re-create a contemporary moving picture postcard from the same view point. The event would film the Time Ball Tower and South Beach front, recording the 2012 Deal Regatta and associated seafront activities.
With The Kent Cultural Baton, a mobile public artwork travelling and producing an alternative cultural map of Kent, the event will portray and celebrate the life of Deal in 2012. The Baton will become a point of exchange moored on the beach distributing specially embroided beach towels and information about the project.
Greetings from DEAL is an ongoing curatorial multi-media project focusing upon the creation and gathering of contemporary, fictional and historic narratives about Deal, Kent. The production of works with residents and former inhabitants of Deal since September 2010 appropriate the postcard as a familiar format that at once connect and distance an audience to a place to manifest site-specific memories.
